The eyes of the golf world will be on Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania this week and the thought in most minds will be who can stop Scottie Scheffler from winning the year’s third Major?
The world number one heads into battle in fantastic form and the demands of one of the world’s toughest courses, with its thick rough and lightning quick greens will be difficult for all of his 155 rivals.
Among them will be defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, who has two top-five Major finishes already this season, and Masters champion Rory McIlroy, who needs to bounce back quickly after missing the cut at last week’s Canadian Open.
Tip 1: Scheffler is undoubtedly the man to beat at Oakmont and even though the price may appear to be on the skinny side, it still looks more than fair.
This is a course where tee-to-green play comes into its own and the Texan is almost a shot better in that regard to any of his PGA Tour rivals, which is a daunting prospect for his 155 challengers this week.
The world number one has also been in supreme form with wins in the CJ Cup, the US PGA Championship and the Memorial Tournament in his last four tournaments and this could be a track where his skills come even more to the fore while many of his rivals could potentially struggle.
Tip 2: Defending champion DeChambeau can be expected to make a bold bid but one player who catches the eye is Sepp Straka, who has taken his game to a new level this year.
The Austrian is a top ball-striker who can get a grip of the demands faced at Oakmont and the quality of his tee-to-green play should help him be a factor.
The hunger is there too. With a Ryder Cup place to play for, Straka is looking for a strong second half of the year and he has already tasted victory at the American Express and the Truist Championship, one of the PGA Tour’s signature events that attracts a strong field. A missed cut at the PGA Championship should ensure he is keen to prove himself and he could be Scheffler’s chief rival at an attractive price.
Tip 3: Shane Lowry was another player who had the weekend off at the most recent Major at Quail Hollow, but the Irishman can bounce back with a strong performance here.
The 2019 Open champion from County Offaly has been unable to finish the job for much of the year, but he should not be intimidated by the linksy feel of Oakmont - a course he was tied-second at back in 2016 - and it could be a challenge he relishes.
Lowry has not posted a PGA Tour victory this season but 18 top-20 finishes in his last 22 efforts shows what a consistent operator he is and the fact he is ranked second from tee to green behind Scheffler is also a big positive this week.
