Saturday Racing Tips – Dan James Racing
Okeechobee lines up as a standout contender in this listed race at Newbury. Trained by Roger Varian, the five-year-old son of Time Test has shown significant promise in middle-distance contests, combining tactical speed with a sharp turn of foot. His recent reappearance, though narrowly beaten, came in a strong renewal of the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot, and that performance suggested he’s primed to strike at this slightly lower level.
With the ground expected to be on the quick side, Okeechobee should relish the conditions and will likely be ridden positively by jockey James Doyle. This race lacks depth, and many rivals come in with form questions. Okeechobee, by contrast, is consistent and proven in Listed company. His balance of class and race fitness makes him a worthy favourite and a solid banker in Sunday’s opening ITV contest. Expect him to be prominent throughout and difficult to pass.
Sir Galahad heads to Market Rasen for a competitive contest attracting proven summer jumpers. Trained by Fergal O’Brien, this eight-year-old has been a model of consistency throughout the spring, placing in his last three starts. A winner over course and distance in 2023, Sir Galahad clearly relishes Market Rasen’s sharp layout, which favours prominent runners with proven stamina. His recent second at Stratford showed he still retains plenty of ability, and the return to a more galloping track will suit his long-striding action.
With Liam Harrison taking off 3lbs, the gelding is well-treated at the weights and should find this field easier than recent assignments. The expected decent ground only boosts his chances further. O’Brien has an excellent strike rate at this track, and Sir Galahad looks set to go close. He’s a strong each-way selection with solid win prospects in a wide-open field.
Wonder Legend steps up to two miles and a half-furlong at Newbury, bringing strong staying credentials into play. A lightly raced four-year-old trained by James Ferguson, he has steadily progressed through the handicap ranks and now gets a proper test of stamina, which looks to be right up his alley. His performance over 1m6f at York last month hinted at untapped staying potential, finishing with purpose behind a well-handicapped rival.
The Newbury track suits gallopers who can finish well, and Wonder Legend has shown the right profile to excel in these conditions. With champion apprentice Billy Loughnane taking the reins, expect a bold ride from off the pace. Connections have targeted this race with intent, and the gelding is reportedly thriving at home. If he settles early and handles the extra distance, he’ll be a serious player—one to include in win bets or long-range doubles.
