Jake Price's Saturday Racing Tips at Kempton
This doesn't look like the strongest renewal of the Pendil, and I think that the Mare Arclight can make use of her 7lbs allowance. This Nicky Henderson charge is an unbelievable jumper of a fence, and she's enjoyed a fantastic campaign over fences so far this season. Making her debut a winning one over 2m2f here in October, this 5yo then went to Exeter and won a Listed race over 2m1½f. Stepping up in trip to 2m4f in December she then scored again without breaking sweat - this time beating Marsh Wren (131+), who has won twice since including a Listed race at Thurles on Thursday.
Arclight could end up taking a bit of beating here considering the weight she receives and how well she jumps.
I’ve had Bowtogreatness on my handicap radar for a long time now, but after a hold-up in the Autumn he finally looks ready to strike. You only have to go back to Aintree in April when this 8yo finished a very good 2nd behind Midnight River (156) on his first attempt at 3m over fences, but he's taken a couple of starts to get back into the swing of things following 259 days off. That return effort at Newbury in December was particularly poor as he jumped terribly, but he was much better at Cheltenham on Trials Day when 5th over an inadequate 2m4½f trip.
Back up in distance to 3m on a flat track like Kempton should be perfect for Saturday however, and off a mark of 133 he's just 1lb higher than Aintree. Ben Pauling has his string in fine form to boot (7/22, 32% strike rate).
12 months ago Mark Of Gold was a facile winner of this race following on from taking a tumble in the Lanzarote Hurdle, and this year he has had the exact same preparation. This Gary Moore 7yo fell at the 2nd flight before bolting up here off 129 last year, and after that victory he went on to run very well in the Martin Pipe at the Cheltenham Festival - finishing 7th behind Iroko when running off an official rating of 139. That mark has proven to be a bit beyond him so far this season, but he's dropped back down to a mark of 136 now.
This time around he made it all the way up until the 4th last before crashing out of the Lanzarote, but in a weaker race I think he can once again make amends - especially as talented 3lbs claimer Caoilin Quinn jumps back aboard for the first time since the Martin Pipe.
