This horse was a slow burner over fences, but he's really taken the chasing world by storm on his last few starts. He ran well on his first few starts over fences when in behind smart types such as Imagine, but since then he's gone to another level altogether and has surpassed anything those horses have achieved as chasers. A winner of a beginners chase at Tipperary, he went to a Listed handicap chaser on his next start at Punchestown where he scored again before rocking up in the Galway Plate over the summer where he duly went again.
He comes here with race fitness on his side and in receipt of 14lbs from the favourite and I firmly believe those two things combined are enough to get him home in front here not to mention he will love the ground and that might just be another negative for the favourite. At the prices he's a very strong bet. I wouldn't like to take him on.
This filly has two fine efforts under her belt over hurdles so far with a run that can be described as a real learning experience first time out over hurdles at Listowel where she caught the eye behind a couple of smart types. She then travelled to Cork where she was given a quiet ride before finishing off to really good effect from the back of the last in what developed into a bit of a sprint to just fail by an ever dwindling half a length.
She comes here race fit now with invaluable experience from her two starts and in receipt of weight from all her main market rivals. This is always a strong race and I'm sure this year will be no different, but this mare has real potential to be a force to be reckoned with this season and this may well be the start of a meteoric rise through the ranks. With that in mind she has to carry my support here.
It's fair to say this son of Conillon has been a disappointment since he arrived from France, but I'm willing to forgive him and take a chance now on handicap debut. People will be falling over themselves to back last season's juvenile form in the shape of Kala Conti, but that should make this lad a bit of a price. I’m not sure as to what is Gordon's first string and I'd be hopeful the market has got this one wrong.
It’s his handicap debut and his first go on a bit of nicer ground which are two big positives for me. He may have disappointed last season but he's a big imposing type who may have just been too big and weak for the ultra-competitive nature of Irish racing. He's got a lovely racing weight and a good jockey on board in Sam Ewing. I think his rating of 125 is very workable for him and I can see him bouncing out handy and being very difficult to pass. Fingers crossed for a big run.
