NAP:

Cheltenham – BURDETT ROAD

Sat 27 Jan, 12:05

view details

Plenty of dead wood on paper and the classy flat performer Burdett Road stands out. Milan Tino produced two solid runs in his native France but was ultimately kicked out of the way by the selection at Cheltenham on their last runs. They were sandwiched in between by An Bradan Feasa, who has since easily won a Triumph trial over the course.

In what may boil down to a match, I will take the Royal Ascot winner and 101 flat rated Burdett Road to overturn impressive Kempton scorer Sir Gino.

NEXT BEST:

Doncaster – GALA MARCEAU

A horse I’ve been looking forward to returning to the track this season is Gala Marceau. Her stablemate is her main market rival and danger, but I think she can show her worth this year. She was bought from France having finished up winning a listed race by 11 lengths, her and stablemate Lossiemouth defeated each other in a couple of runs before Lossiemouth again took revenge in the Triumph.

Plenty eyes would have been drawn to the winner, but the path wasn’t as clear for Gala Marceau, and she was definitely the eye-catcher in that Festival race. She was bumped about and had to weave past horses from the second last, didn’t get the plain sailing of the winner, had to come around horses on the run to the last and still powered up to the line to be runner-up.

She then made no mistake when stepped up last time out at the back end of last season when she bolted up in a French grade one. She beat a warm favourite that day, with stablemate and subsequent Galway Hurdle winner Zarak The Brave 12 lengths back. Although Ashroe Diamond has better form on paper, the selection is two years younger and rated higher.

In what may turn out another match, I will take Danny Mullins to dictate this and come out on top.

LONG SHOT:

Cheltenham – STRAW FAN JACK

I will chance an each-way play on Straw Fan Jack. He’s back into a handicap having bolted up two handicap starts ago off 10 pound lower. He has since beat AshTree Meadow over the course (won Galway Plate and Grade Two since). Then went ram five lengths fourth in another handicap off four-pound higher mark.

Only a couple of lengths ahead that day was Coral Gold Cup winner Datsalrightgino. He then contested a warm Arkle at the festival behind El Fabiolo and Jonbon, the two Queen Mother market leaders. He ran behind subsequent grade two winner Banbridge in the Grade Two Manifesto at the Grand National meeting. And, has reappeared this season in a Grade Two and Class Two, without showing his best.

This class drop back into a handicap off a mark of 138, on a course he’s won at, I’m hoping he can run a huge race at a big price.
