The 2025 Formula 1 world championship battle is shaping up to be a classic, with McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris aiming to outperform each other while also trying to fend off the mighty talent of four-time world champion Max Verstappen.
The Red Bull star claimed his second win of the season at Imola in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix last Sunday, but Piastri still leads the standings by 13 points from Norris, with Verstappen 22 points off the lead.
Now, the drivers turn their attention to the unique challenge of the iconic Monte Carlo street circuit for the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, May 25th.
Charles Leclerc won his home race for Ferrari in Monaco last season, but the Monegaque driver will be hoping his team can solve their qualifying issues at a track where grid position is critical.
The stage is set for another fascinating showdown between the top teams at the high-speed circuit.
Oscar Piastri couldn't make the most of pole position at Imola last weekend, but he looks to be the rightful favourite to win the Monaco Grand Prix for the first time on Sunday.
McLaren's strengths of tyre management and high-speed performance are negated on the twisting street circuit, where tyre wear is low, but the British team still have a strong all-round car that went well in Monte Carlo last season.
Piastri was second to hometown hero Leclerc 12 months ago in only his second GP at the track, but he had previous experience there from his F2 days and is clearly well suited to the challenge.
Norris continues to blow hot and cold but he has four runner-up finishes since winning the opening race of the season in Melbourne and should not be far away, although he has had only one podium finish in Monte Carlo from five visits and has yet to shine at the venue.
Verstappen benefited from an upgraded car at Imola, but the tight track does not play to the Red Bull's strengths and he was a disappointing sixth there in his dominant championship campaign last season.
With qualifying being crucial at Monaco, Ferrari could leave themselves with a lot of work to do in the race if they can't solve their Saturday struggles after both cars missed Q3 last week, but George Russell of Mercedes may just be able to get in the mix with the top three.
Monaco presents a challenge that drivers either love or hate and Frenchman Pierre Gasly should be looking forward to this weekend's race.
The Alpine driver has finished out of the points only once in six visits to Monte Carlo despite racing for Toro Rosso, Red Bull, Alpha Tauri and Alpine in his career and even that 2022 effort represented an excellent drive as he gained six places in the race after qualifying 17th.
Gasly has only one points finish so far this season, a seventh place in Bahrain, but he had a decent weekend at Imola and qualified 10th only to drop to 13th in the race after an early incident with Leclerc.
With the pace of top teams restricted by the confines of the circuit, midfield teams such as Alpine have a chance to get involved and Monaco specialist Gasly can target a points finish.
