Darrell Clarke has worked wonders at Cheltenham Town. Taking over in September the Robins had yet to score and had collected just one point from the opening 11 league games. A regular to oppose in the fivefold this week they make their first appearance as one of the selections to win. Clarke has seen his side pick-up 22 points since becoming manager and have only lost one of their last five games winning three. The most eye-catching of which being in their last home game where they defeated league leaders Portsmouth 2-1.

Opponents Carlisle sit one place below Town in the league and three points adrift. The Cumbrians have one win in 12 league games losing eight of them and on the road, they have lost six of their last seven. A trip to rock bottom Fleetwood seeing them pick up their only point in that run. Cheltenham hold the upper hand in recent meetings too, winning four of the last five including the reverse fixture last month.

Peterborough beat Charlton 2-1 on Saturday to storm into the automatic promotion places, just a point behind leaders Portsmouth and with a game in hand. Such is the congested nature of the top of League One every game is a must win. Posh’s rise to 2nd in the table is off the back of 10 games unbeaten with seven ending in victory. They have made their home a fortress and are unbeaten since a defeat to Derby in August scoring 26 times in the subsequent 10 games conceding just seven.

Shrewsbury are in dire form losing six of their last seven games across all competitions including an exit to League Two opposition in the FA Cup, failing to score in five of those fixtures.

Gillingham vs Forest Green Rovers

A run of three straight wins has put Gillingham right back in the play-off picture. The 2-1 win at Accrington on Saturday was a first of the season from behind. This represents a fantastic opportunity to extend that good form as the Gills welcome rock-bottom Forest Green to the Priestfield Stadium.

After watching his side’s 2-0 home defeat to Harrogate Troy Deeney opted to call a few players out. On a broad level stating there were "too many babies" in his squad while pinpointing right-back Fankaty Dabo by calling his performance "awful". The club have not won a league game since October and the concern for fans would be their fourth boss in seven months has already lost the dressing room. Seven defeats from their last nine league away games tell its own story, and everything points to a Gillingham win here.

Brentford vs Nottingham Forest

Brentford have a huge injury list and are also in a terrible run of form. However, the return of one player may well fix those issues. Ivan Toney will be making his return to competitive action having served his eight-month suspension and he can make the difference here. This could be the perfect time to play Forest with the club rocked by the news this week that they have been charged with breaching the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Nuno Espirito Santo also must contend without a league high six players away on AFCON duty. The return of their talisman will further galvanise a vociferous home support and those two factors can make all the difference here.

Leeds United vs Preston North End

Leeds continued their excellent New Year form with their defeat of Cardiff a third successive 3-0 win of 2024. The Whites remain seven points off the automatic promotion places but are certainly keeping the pressure on. Elland Road has been a fortress under Daniel Farke, yet to taste defeat on home soil under the German Head Coach who already has two Championship winners’ medals to his name. The Yorkshire side have been rampant winning nine of their last 10 home league games scoring at least three times in six of those fixtures.

Preston gained just their third win from their last 11 Championship fixtures at the weekend. A run which has seen them drop out of the play-off places and into mid-table, losing five of their previous six games before the win at home to Bristol City. Elland Road will be rocking for this Sunday lunchtime kick off and the faithful can roar their side on to a crucial three points ahead of the top two meeting the following day.
