Jack Wright’s Weekend 10/1 Fivefold

All eyes turn back to domestic football after the international break, and Jack Wright has selected five teams to wrap up all three points.

Bolton Wanderers vs Exeter City

Bolton’s 1-0 victory over Blackpool ahead of the international break closed the gap to league leaders Portsmouth to just one point. Wanderers will be looking for an eighth straight win here. Something only achieved by the club three times in its history and not since 1990.

Ian Evett’s side have an in-form international striker to help them achieve that. Dion Charles scoring his 3rd goal for Northern Ireland in their 2-0 midweek win over Denmark.

They take on an Exeter side that are in terrible form having lost nine of their last 10 fixtures in all competitions. Including their last four league road trips scoring just once and conceding 12 times.

Peterborough United vs Burton Albion

Peterborough are in a rich run of form led by their pacy attack described as “frightening” by owner Darragh MacAnthony. His side have now only lost one of their last 16 in all competitions and dismantled Cambridge in a 5-0 hammering last time out on home soil in the league. That was a fourth win in five at their Weston Homes Stadium with all those victories coming with a clean sheet.

They welcome a Burton side with no win in six and who have lost each of their last three games. Failing to score in four of the last five.

Wycombe Wanderers vs Reading

Reading last won away from home in the league on November the 12th…2022. Exactly 20 road trips have since past with the Royals losing 18 of them. I was speaking to one of their fans as they led 2-0 at Shrewsbury before the international break. He predicted a 3-2 defeat, and he got it spot on. That was against a side that had scored seven times in their previous 17 league games.

The caveat here is Wycombe aren’t in the best of form but are still only five points off the play-offs. They couldn’t pick a better opponent to claim three points and reignite their promotion chase.

Newport County vs Stockport County

Stockport are becoming a staple of my Weekend Fivefold column and why not. Dave Challinor’s men have just equalled a League Two record by winning their 12th league game in a row. They have won more points and scored more goals than any other club in England’s top four tiers. Putting the Hatters bang on course for a third promotion in six seasons.

I am taking them to claim another three points here at Newport County who have only won one of their last seven at home in the league.

They were beaten comfortably by second placed Mansfield at the weekend and lost both games against Stockport last season scoring once whilst conceding six.

Swindon Town vs Mansfield Town

Talking of Mansfield, they are the final selection this week. Nigel Clough continues to do an excellent job, with the aforementioned defeat of Newport maintaining the Stags unbeaten start to their League Two campaign. Three games short of the club’s all-time record set in 1976. It was also a fifth successive win in the league which sees them sitting second in the table.

In contrast Swindon are in the midst of a slump. The weekend draw at a Harrogate side that had lost their previous five home games at least ended their own losing run of five games.

The Robins had conceded 17 goals in the four games prior to that 1-1 draw and come up against League Two’s meanest defence here. I can see only one winner.
