Irish Derby Meeting. Day Three – CopyBet

The Irish Derby meeting is a competitive three days of action at the Curragh, culminating on Sunday with the Group 1 Irish Derby itself.

The first three home from the Epsom Derby go up against each other once more in what is sure to be a competitive affair, and perhaps Green Impact could be the one to launch the biggest challenge to front-running Epsom hero Lambourn this time.

There are nine races on the card starting at 13:15, and we have three selections for the action.

Curragh –
Songhai

BET NOW

In what is a typically competitive Curragh card, the best bet may come in a Listed sprint over six furlongs at 14:25. The race has attracted a good field of 12 runners and it can pay to side with an improving three-year-old over the older more experienced horses.

The Johnny Murtagh-trained filly Songhai has improved with each start, and despite failing to win since her debut will be making just fifth career start and she looks a filly to follow.

On her second career start she was second behind Arizona Blaze, who subsequently finished second in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.

Following that she was third in a race which has been working out incredibly well, with the winner placing in a Group 2 and Listed races, while the second has won a Listed race and the fourth has gone on to success in a Group 3.

On her most recent start Songhai was second in a Listed contest over five furlongs, doing all her best work late in the race, and a return to 6f should play to her strengths and she can secure a first Listed race success.

NEXT BEST:

Curragh –
Lambourn

The Irish Derby is the feature race of the day, and with the first three home in the Derby reopposing this looks a real treat.

While Epsom third Tennessee Stud might be able to finish closer to Lambourn than he managed last time, the Aidan O'Brien colt is once more the most likely winner of the race.

Lazy Griff has been second to him in his last two races, and while he is likely to run well again, it is unlikely he will get the better of Lambourn.

Of those who could perhaps cause Lambourn issues, Green Impact has a lot of upside. He will have needed his reappearance effort in the 2,000 Guineas, and was a good winner over 9f most recently. The extra 3f of this race is an unknown factor but he shapes as if it will benefit him and he should run well.

This being said, it will take a special performance for any of them to beat Lambourn. He largely had things his own way from the front at Epsom, but he won convincingly by just shy of four lengths and that is a big gap for any of the opposing challengers from Epsom to overcome. Lambourn should add to his winning streak with a second Group 1 victory.

LONG SHOT:

Curragh –
Westminster Moon

BET NOW

This is a typically competitive affair and a case can be made for a number of the runners in the field. It is however a horse who did his racing in Germany last season who catches the eye.

Westminster Moon has been disappointing since joining Tony Martin’s stable this season, but he is incredibly well handicapped on his form in Germany last year, most notably when third in the Group 2 Premio Roma Italian Champion.

He has been well beaten in his four runs this season, but as a result has had his rating dropped by 12lb. If he puts it all together, an official rating of 96 could look very generous.
