Goodwood Festival Friday Tips – Dan James Racing

OPERA BALLO – Goodwood

Fri 01 Aug, 13:55

This one’s been quietly progressive, and I get the feeling connections have had this race in mind for a while. Not overly exposed and looks the type to improve for a bit more racing. The way the race sets up could suit him perfectly likely a decent pace, and I think he’ll be staying on when others are folding.

If you dig into his form, there are hints that he’s better than he’s shown so far, and the vibes from the yard are positive. Not many will have him at the top of their lists, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him run a big one. Good each-way value, and a live danger to the more fancied runners.

SKUKUZA – Goodwood

He’s a horse on the up and has been improving with every run. After a solid comeback, he’s now put together back-to-back wins and is clearly thriving. The way he travelled and quickened at the Curragh last time out was impressive, especially against a decent field. Ryan Moore knows exactly how to ride him getting him handy and kicking at the right time and I think that partnership is key here.

Ground and trip both suits, and if he runs to the level he showed in his last listed win, I don’t see many in this field living with him. He’s got a touch of class and still looks like there’s more to come. Confident selection.

KYLE OF LOCHALSH – Goodwood

Fri 01 Aug, 13:20

I’m expecting a bold run. He’s a proven stayer and these are the sort of races he thrives in. His last run was better than the bare result where he didn’t get the clearest passage and still stuck on gamely. He’s dropped to a mark he can definitely win off, and Hughie Morrison knows how to get one ready for these staying handicaps.

The pace should be honest, which suits his running style, and if he settles early, I can see him picking them off late. He’s a tough, honest horse with form at this level, and I reckon this is the day it all comes together again. Wouldn’t put anyone off backing him straight win.
