Friday’s Worcester Betting Preview: CopyBet Fixed Brush Hurdle Final

Friday’s 14:40 is a Class 2 novices’ handicap hurdle for horses aged three and over, run over approximately two miles and four furlongs. The race carries £70,000 in guaranteed prize money, with around £36,421 going to the winner, making it a valuable target for horses still relatively early in their hurdling careers. Entry is restricted to horses that have finished in the first six in an ARC Summer Novices’ Brush Hurdle Series qualifier during the current season. Worcester is a flat, galloping jumps course, and the going is currently listed as Good. The final features ten hurdles, putting an emphasis on finding a consistent jumping rhythm as well as seeing out the 2m4f distance.

Down To Business is one of the younger horses in the field, with the four-year-old trained by Dan Skelton. His pedigree is an interesting one for a hurdler: he is by Ghaiyyath, the multiple Group 1 winner whose best performances came on the Flat, giving Down To Business an interesting combination of speed and middle-distance breeding.

Worcester has already played an important role in his development. On 23 August, he won a Class 4 maiden hurdle over two miles on Good ground, having travelled in mid-division before making progress late in the race and taking the lead at the final hurdle. That victory came in an ARC Summer Novices’ Brush Hurdle Series qualifier and therefore provided the route towards Friday’s final.

Six-year-old Lock Stock comes into the race after making his breakthrough over hurdles at Worcester earlier this month. Now trained by Stuart Edmunds after previously being with Ben Pauling, he had finished runner-up on his first two hurdle starts before getting off the mark on 10 September.

That victory came in a Class 4 maiden hurdle over two miles on Good ground. Sent off the 10/11 favourite, Lock Stock beat 11 rivals to record his first win under Rules. It continued a useful Worcester record: he had also finished second in a Class 3 novice hurdle at the course in October 2025, when beaten 3¼ lengths in a 15-runner field.

His breeding offers another point of interest as the distance increases. Lock Stock is by Jack Hobbs and out of a Kayf Tara mare, giving him a pedigree containing considerable stamina. Previous racecourse evidence remains more important than pedigree alone, but the move to 2m4f adds another dimension after much of his hurdle form was established around two miles. Returning to a course where he has already run well also gives Friday’s race a useful reference point.

Wearing the famous silks of Sir Alex Ferguson, Road To Wembley has arguably the most directly relevant Worcester performance of these four because he has already won over Friday’s course and distance.

The Olly Murphy-trained five-year-old won at Aintree over approximately 2m1f in May before returning from a break for an ARC Summer Novices’ Brush Hurdle Series qualifier at Worcester on 19 August. Stepping up to 2m4f, he raced in mid-division before making progress in the closing stages and staying on strongly to take the lead near the finish. Racing TV records the winning margin over Square d’Alboni as three-quarters of a length, with the race also run on Good ground.

That result is particularly useful when assessing his profile for the final because it came under very similar basic conditions: Worcester, 2m4f and Good going. It demonstrated that the longer distance was within his range and secured his qualification for this race.

Square d’Alboni gives Dan Skelton another interesting representative and already has his own Worcester success to build upon. The four-year-old won a novice hurdle here on 16 July, racing prominently before taking the lead after three out and staying on strongly. That followed an earlier hurdle success at Stratford and continued a progressive sequence after he had been placed earlier in his novice campaign.

Perhaps the most relevant piece of form, however, is his subsequent meeting with Road To Wembley. Square d’Alboni returned to Worcester for the 2m4f qualifier on 19 August and led approaching two out before being caught late, finishing three-quarters of a length behind Road To Wembley.

That race provided evidence that Square d’Alboni can operate effectively over Friday’s course and distance, while also highlighting how closely matched two of the final’s runners have already been under comparable conditions. With previous Worcester experience and several summer runs behind him, the Series Final represents the next step in his first full season over hurdles.

Friday’s Worcester card also sees jockey Johnny Burke in action with four rides, including Oneinthewell in the CopyBet Fixed Brush Final at 2:40. Burke said he felt the horse ran a strong race in the qualifying round and believes his experience and consistency could give him a good each-way chance.
