EFL 4/1 Acca – Gab Sutton
The EFL action continues this weekend, and EFL expert Gab Sutton picks his best bets in this weekend’s EFL Acca!
Millwall vs Middlesbrough
Millwall fans enjoyed a pre-season optimism that last weekend’s opening day 2-1 victory at much-fancied Norwich has done little to quell, with Macaulay Langstaff netting the winner at Carrow Road.
Tristan Crama impressed for the Lions at right-back, while Camiel Neghli looked bright and inventive in forward areas, showing to have a fierce shot on him.
The Lions have a useful physical outlet in forward Josh Coburn, who can create space for striker Mihailo Ivanovic, with creativity coming from Neghli, and directness, from Femi Azeez.
While the hosts look in a great place, visitors Middlesbrough lost 4-0 at home to Doncaster in the EFL Cup in midweek, after edging a tight opener with Swansea.
Stevenage vs Northampton
Stevenage have enjoyed the perfect start to their League One campaign, opening with a 3-2 victory at Blackpool courtesy of a Jamie Reid brace, before ‘Big Goal Reidy’ grabbed the only goal against Rotherham to secure back-to-back wins.
As such, Alex Revell’s side have the ideal opportunity to identify themselves early on as potential dark horses, as they look to have built on the strong defensive foundations they’ve established across the last three years.
Their next opponents, Northampton, are arguably the worst team in the league; they lost 3-1 at Wigan on the opening day, then mustered a meagre four shots all afternoon in a goalless home draw with Bradford.
The Cobblers’ first two league games have done little to quell pre-season concerns that they haven’t improved sufficiently in attacking areas – somebody like Elliott List, for instance, was let go of by Stevenage, one of the teams they’d be looking to strive to compete with.
Grimsby vs Newport
Grimsby weren’t exactly short of motivation, after starting the season with two wins and a draw in league and cup, but the EFL Cup 2nd Round draw pitted them against Manchester United at Blundell Park in a couple of weeks.
It’s a great opportunity for David Artell’s men to show what they can do on the global stage, and test themselves against some top players, and in the meantime, players will be chomping at the bit in what is a deep, strong squad with quality across the board.
The Mariners have shown the ability to consistently create chances in all three of their games, and that’s reflected in the nine goals they’ve scored – including a late fightback at Harrogate in the previous league encounter.
Newport have had a bright start themselves but were somewhat fortunate to win 2-1 at Crawley last time out in League Two – or at least had clinical finishing and Nik Tzanev to thank.
