EFL 3/1 Acca – Gab Sutton
Ahead of another busy weekend in the EFL, Gab Sutton has scoured the leagues to bring you another exciting EFL acca!
Ipswich to win
Ipswich kick-started their season with aplomb when they thumped Sheffield United 5-0 at Portman Road, just after the international break, before their trip to Blackburn got controversially abandoned and replayed.
Jaden Philogene has found form for Kieran McKenna’s side, bagging a hat-trick against the Blades, while Azor Matusiwa is starting to forge a strong midfield pairing with Jens Cajuste.
Kasey McAteer has made a difference, too: Town have arguably more skilful individuals in their wide options, but their initial rise was built on balance, having one wide man who can track back and keep the shape, and it looks like McAteer can do that.
With that in mind, the Tractor Boys should do the business against a Portsmouth side who have scored the joint-second fewest goals in the division.
Barnsley to win
After an underwhelming midtable season last year, Barnsley have pleasantly surprised their punters so far this season, finding themselves in the top six under the management of rookie head coach Conor Hourihane.
The Reds have reconnected with some core principles, being a vibrant, exuberant young team with talents like Jack Shepherd, Jonny Bland and Caylan Vickers, supplemented by a smattering of experience in Josh Earl and David McGoldrick.
Barnsley suffered their second defeat of the season at Blackpool last time out, but they’ve created good chances in every other game and have been among the most inventive sides in the division.
As such, the South Yorkshire outfit look good value to beat a Port Vale side who are 19th – and that’s having faced bottom half opposition in six of their nine league fixtures thus far.
Chesterfield to win
Chesterfield’s perfect start to the season of three straight victories has wobbled slightly, with one win in six, and popular assistant Danny Webb leaving for the Yeovil job (and quitting that within a few days).
Then again, the Spireites have only lost twice so far this season, and those defeats have come against top three opposition in Gillingham and Walsall, so they should have more than enough experience and depth to see off strugglers Newport.
David Hughes’ side began brightly with four points from two but have since taken just one point from their last seven games which, even taking fixtures into account, is cause for alarm.
Chesterfield, meanwhile, have the luxury of bringing somebody like winger Dilan Markanday, a star player in the first half of last season, off the bench, such is their wealth of options.
