EFL 3/1 Acca – Gab Sutton

The EFL season is well and truly underway, and ahead of another exciting round of fixtures, Gab Sutton has selected three sides he expects to claim victory in this weekend’s EFL Acca!

Portsmouth to win

Sheffield Wednesday were always likely to produce some spirited performances in the first month of the season as a show of defiance, but now we’re in September, and they have just a solitary point to their name.

The Owls were beaten 3-0 by Bristol City last weekend, with a skeletal squad including seven youngsters on the bench, while fans are staying away until owner Dejphon Chansiri sells the club.

So, a significant aspect of this bet is the anti-Wednesday angle, although there’s also a case for Portsmouth, who are enjoying a positive second season up so far, having amassed a respectable eight points from their first five games, earning a valuable point in the South Coast Derby at Southampton last time out.

Boasting one of the best wingers in the Championship in Josh Murphy, John Mousinho’s side were the better team that day: replicate that performance level on Saturday and they’ll take the three points.

Huddersfield to win

Huddersfield have benefited from the extensive rebuild their contractual circumstances denied them last summer, with Lee Grant’s side flying high at the top following a summer turnover of 27 senior players.

The Terriers are playing some good football, and have begun with five wins in eight, even if defeats against Barnsley and Bradford highlight room for improvement against the better teams.

The West Yorkshire outfit play with an attacking 4-2-3-1 system, although it can morph into a 3-4-2-1 in-possession, as right-back Lasse Sorensen flies forward, left-back Sean Roughan tucks into a back-three, and Marcus Harness drifts in from the right to become a second #10, supporting Ben Wiles.

Town should have all the ingredients to unlock a Burton side who have lost four of their first six and are missing the focal point that Jon Dadi Bodvarsson provided them up top last season.

MK Dons to win

The division’s biggest budget at home to the division’s smallest: League Two doesn’t always follow the logic that the more expensively assembled side will prevail, and football’s never that simple.

MK Dons might not have hit top gear yet, sitting in tenth after eight games, but three of the five matches in which they’ve dropped points have come against top seven opposition.

Whereas, when Paul Warne’s side have faced the lower teams, in terms of both placing and budget, their individual quality has tended to shine. They’ve beaten Cheltenham 5-0 and done the business against Barrow and Newport.

With the creativity of Dan Crowley, the directness of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and the pace of Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, the Buckinghamshire outfit should see off an Accrington Stanley side that have won just one of their opening seven games.
