Curragh Guineas Weekend – Day Two – CopyBet
The Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival at the Curragh is up and running and Saturday afternoon brings with it the 2000 Guineas as Field Of Gold bids to atone for his Newmarket disappointment by going a place better for John & Thady Gosden.
They have eight races at the Curragh, from 13:20-17:25, with the 2000 Guineas due off at 15:40 and a supporting card that includes the Group 2 Greenlands Stakes and the Emerald Mile Handicap.
The Listed Orby Stakes over a mile-and-a-half looks very open, with class-dropper Trustyourinstinct conceding weight to the field for Joseph O'Brien and being the top-rated contender.
Johnny Murtagh, meanwhile, saddles SIEGE OF TROY, with Oisin Murphy once more on the Siyouni filly after they finished fourth in a similar contest at Gowran Park 17 days ago.
That was her first start since October and she did as well as could be hoped under a patient ride with the drop in trip uncertain to have aided her after a break.
She went off favourite and her effort can be marked up, given how the race panned out. She is still unexposed over this trip and will be suited by fast ground. She looks like a big contender now.
The Group 2 Greenlands Stakes may revolve around Australian import Storm Boy on his first start for Aidan O'Brien. The Justify colt ran well in four races in the last Australian spring for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott before a big-money purchase from the Coolmore team.
He could be anything but is something of an unknown for now and so MY MATE ALFIE is the pick.
The gelded son of Dark Angel was second on his comeback behind Fozzy Stack's Two Stars in a Listed event at Naas in April. That pair were a long way clear and on the terms My Mate Alfie came out as the best horse in the race.
That was his first start since October and he ended last season very much on the up. Both he and Two Stars can make their marks in Group-company sprints this season and the Ger Lyons/Colin Keane team can bag a winner here.
The Irish 2000 Guineas betting is dominated by Newmarket runner-up Field Of Gold as the Juddmonte-owned colt looks to atone for his Rowley Mile disappointment.
John Gosden felt Kieran Shoemark's ride was less than exemplary then, so Colin Keane is the man on board now.
The six-time Irish champion jockey is the perfect partner, but this is no penalty kick for the Clarehaven representative and only two horses placed in the Guineas at Newmarket were able to win here in the last decade.
The home challenge includes Officer and Expanded for Aidan O'Brien, as well as Scorthy Champ for Joseph O'Brien - who should do better than at Newmarket - and the smart two-year-old Hotazhell for Jessica Harrington. He lacks a run.
Another UK raider, RASHABAR, doesn't lack for practice after finishing clear second to Jonquil in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury six weeks ago. The Holy Roman Emperor colt had some excellent 2YO for at 6f/7f and could run into the money on this first attempt at a mile.
