The 2025 Formula 1 world championship season is coming to the boil nicely as the cars head to the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg for the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, June 29th.

George Russell became the fourth driver to win in the first 10 races of the season with his success in Canada two weeks ago, and the British Mercedes driver is also looking to score back-to-back wins in Austria after his 2024 victory from Oscar Piastri.

McLaren still lead the way in the championship and despite finishing only fourth in Canada, Piastri extended his championship lead to 22 points over teammate Lando Norris.

Max Verstappen has won Red Bull's home race four times, but only once in the last three seasons. His clash with Norris when they were fighting for the lead 12 months ago ruined both their races and handed Russell a win he couldn't have expected.

With Mercedes buoyed by their first 2025 victory, Red Bull racing at home and Ferrari hoping to benefit from a car update this weekend, it should be another close race at a circuit that has seen some fierce battles in recent seasons.

The Austrian Grand Prix has been a sprint-race weekend in each of the last three seasons, but that is not the case this year. There is still plenty to look forward to, though, with the margins between the leading teams becoming extremely small and different cars coming to the fore from race to race.

Mercedes benefited from relatively cool conditions and a low tyre-wear circuit in Canada but have said they expect a tougher time in Austria, and while Max Verstappen can never be ruled out, he now has only one win in the last seven races and looks to be around the right price in the market.

McLaren have won seven of the 10 races this season but it's no surprise that championship leader Piastri is favoured in the win market as he has become a far more trustworthy selection than the inconsistent Norris.

Yet again the British driver looked to have marginally more pace than his teammate in Canada, perhaps benefiting from a new suspension configuration that only he was running as Piastri prefers the old version.

He looked to have more pace than Piastri in the later laps in Montreal but crashed out of fifth place with a rash move on the pit straight.

Norris retains the potential to be the fastest driver on the track on any given race weekend but he can struggle to deliver when it matters most, with multiple let-downs in the final period of qualifying this season, so Piastri looks a more reliable choice at the moment.

The Australian finished second in the sprint race in Austria last season. He made life tough for himself when his best lap in qualifying was deleted for breaching track limits (a regular problem in Austria).

That dropped him from the top three to seventh on the grid but he raced well to take the runner-up spot and might have overhauled Russell for the win given a few more laps.

With a more representative grid position this time, he should be challenging for his first Spielberg success.

Charles Leclerc to finish 3rd

Ferrari were a little way off the main protagonists in Canada, finishing fifth and sixth, but they are set to bring the first part of an upgrade package to Austria in the form of a new floor, with a new rear suspension to follow in the next race at Silverstone.

With Mercedes not so well suited to this circuit as they were in Montreal, the Italian team could challenge for at least the final place on the podium and Charles Leclerc is worth backing to finish third at a circuit where he has an excellent record.

The Monegasque driver won the 2022 race in Austria and has been runner-up at the track three times, in 2019, 2020 and 2023.

He also won at Spielberg in his Formula 2 championship-winning season in 2017 and he should be looking forward to this week's race if Ferrari have delivered any significant improvement to their cars.
