York Ebor Festival Day 1: Great Voltigeur and Juddmonte International Preview
Ahead of the opening day of York’s Ebor Festival, here’s a closer look at two of Wednesday’s key races and the leading contenders to watch, with the CopyBet Overnight Best Odds Guaranteed offer available on selected races.
Great Voltigeur Stakes – York
The Great Voltigeur Stakes is one of Britain’s established St Leger trials, and the 2026 renewal brings together ten three-year-olds over 1m 3f 188y on good-to-firm ground.
Maltese CrossMaltese Cross returns from France as a Group 1 winner and is one of the most interesting contenders at York. This is a horse who has established himself as one of the leading middle-distance three-year-olds.
He has won three of his four starts in 2026, with his only defeat coming when second to Christmas Day in the Derby.
His season began with victory over 1m 2f at Newbury before he narrowly won the Lingfield Derby Trial. At Epsom, the longer distance posed no obvious problem, but Christmas Day proved 2¾ lengths too strong.
Maltese Cross responded with the biggest victory of his career in July. Held up in traffic in the Grand Prix de Paris at ParisLongchamp, he found room late and caught Ancient Egypt to win by a head, earning his first Group 1 success.
Juddmonte International Stakes – York
The Juddmonte International, following at 15:35, presents a very different contest. Nine runners are declared for the Group 1 over 1m 2f 56y, where the weight-for-age conditions allow the leading three-year-olds to take on established older horses while receiving an allowance.
The horse race has produced an exceptional list of winners, including Giant’s Causeway, Sea The Stars, Frankel, Australia, Baaeed and City Of Troy. The 2026 edition could add another significant name, with defending champion Ombudsman facing a younger challenger, Constitution River, who has already proved himself against older Group 1 opposition.
OmbudsmanOmbudsman returns to York looking to defend the Juddmonte International title he won by 3½ lengths from Delacroix last year.
The five-year-old has followed an unusual route to the top. He did not race at two but won all four starts during his first season on the track, progressing from maiden company to Group 3 success in France.
His first Group 1 victory came in the 2025 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. He followed that with a victory at York, reversing his earlier Coral-Eclipse defeat by Delacroix.
Ombudsman has been unbeaten in three starts in 2026. Victories in the Dubai Turf and Brigadier Gerard Stakes were followed by another Prince of Wales’s Stakes success at Royal Ascot, where he beat Minnie Hauk by four lengths. In doing so, he became the first horse since Muhtarram in 1995 to win the race in consecutive years.
Constitution RiverConstitution River represents the Classic generation and arrives at York after three consecutive victories for Aidan O’Brien.
The Wootton Bassett colt started that sequence in the Dee Stakes at Chester before stepping into Group 1 company in the Prix du Jockey Club. Despite a wide draw at Chantilly, he beat stablemates Hawk Mountain and Montreal to lead home an O’Brien-trained 1-2-3.
His next assignment provided an even stronger indication of his ability. Constitution River took on older horses in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown, moved to the front two furlongs from home and pulled three lengths clear. It was his second successive Group 1 victory and showed that he could transfer his three-year-old form into all-age company.
Set to carry 9st 1lb at York, Constitution River receives the weight-for-age allowance from Ombudsman. That makes their meeting particularly interesting: one has the advantage of proven Juddmonte International form, while the other brings youth, an allowance and a rapidly improving record.
