The second Signature Event of the PGA Tour season takes place this week, with a star-studded field heading to Riviera Country Club in San Diego, California for the Genesis Invitational.

The top two in the world, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, are both in attendance, alongside the likes of Tommy Fleetwood, Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama.

Riviera is one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour and one player who knows how to tame a difficult layout is Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick, who won the 2022 US Open at the treacherous Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Possessing a solid tee-to-green game will be essential this week and the 31-year-old is ranked seventh in strokes gained in this department on the US circuit and fourth in approach.

Hitting fairways and avoiding the thick, grabby rough will also prove beneficial and it bodes well that Fitzpatrick is eighth in driving accuracy, an area of his game that has been consistently strong over the years.

The world number 20 heads into this tournament in strong form, having posted a ninth-placed effort at the Phoenix Open and a tied-14th at the AT&T Pebble Beach on his last two starts, while he has fond memories of the Genesis after recording a top five in 2021.

There have been plenty of players who have won the Genesis Invitational and the Masters and one of those is Australian Adam Scott, who has triumphed twice at Riviera and once at Augusta National.

The 45-year-old is still competing at the very top of the game and while he is yet to really hit his straps this year, there have been enough positives from top-30 finishes on his last two starts at The American Express and Farmers Insurance Open to suggest he can get in the mix this week.

Scott loves this course and along with his two victories in 2005 and 2020, he has also finished runner-up twice, recorded a top five and posted two top-10s, evidence of how much his game suits this challenging layout.

If he can exact some improvement with the putter - a club which has caused him problems during his career - then there is every chance Scott can become a three-time champion of this event.

American Tony Finau is enduring a long trophy drought, last tasting success at the 2023 Mexico Open, but there have been shoots of recovery over the last few weeks and that can continue with a top-20 finish at Riviera.

The 36-year-old was tied-11th at the Farmers Insurance Open, missed the cut at the Phoenix Open before then responding with a share of 18th place at last week's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Finau also has strong Genesis form, having finished tied-second in 2018 when losing out to Bubba Watson by two strokes and then losing out to Max Homa in a play-off three years later.

This is clearly a part of the country the former world number nine enjoys playing in and he can continue his recent recovery with another solid effort.
