Sun Chariot Stakes and Two Year Old Trophy: Saturday Racing Preview
Ahead of Saturday’s racing at Newmarket and Redcar, here’s a closer look at the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes and the Two Year Old Trophy, along with some of the leading horses in the line-up, with the CopyBet Overnight Best Odds Guaranteed offer available.
Sun Chariot Stakes – Newmarket
The BetMGM Sun Chariot Stakes is a Group 1 contest for fillies and mares over one mile on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile. Worth £375,000 in total prize money, it provides another major late-season test for some of Britain and Ireland’s leading milers. The straight Rowley Mile is not simply about speed, with its undulations and demanding finish capable of rewarding horses who can settle before sustaining their effort through the closing stages. Blue Bolt, City Of Memphis and Evolutionist are among the seven declared runners, bringing together current Group 1 form and previous Newmarket experience.
Blue BoltBlue Bolt arrives with one of the strongest form profiles in the race. Andrew Balding’s four-year-old has won five consecutive races, including the Falmouth Stakes, Prix Rothschild and Matron Stakes at Group 1 level. Her Falmouth victory is particularly relevant as it came over a mile at Newmarket, while she most recently finished two and a quarter lengths ahead of City Of Memphis in the Matron at Leopardstown.
There is also an interesting piece of unfinished business at Newmarket. Blue Bolt finished second in last year’s Sun Chariot, but her subsequent improvement has been considerable. She returns this season with proven course form and a sequence of high-level victories behind her. The challenge now is to maintain that level after a campaign that has already included major races in Britain, France and Ireland.
City Of MemphisCity Of Memphis brings a notably consistent record into the Sun Chariot. The Paddy Twomey-trained filly has won four of her six career starts and has yet to finish outside the first two. Her most significant victory came in the Group 2 Lanwades Stud Stakes at the Curragh over a mile, confirming that the distance suits her.
Her latest run provides an especially useful comparison with Blue Bolt. City Of Memphis finished second to her in the Group 1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown, and that remains her only defeat this season. Newmarket presents a different challenge from the Irish tracks where she has produced her strongest form, so the Rowley Mile will provide another measure of her progress at Group 1 level.
EvolutionistEvolutionist returns to a course where she has already produced an important performance this season. Karl Burke’s three-year-old finished second to True Love in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket in May, beaten one and three-quarter lengths in a 19-runner field. That run demonstrated her ability to cope with both the Rowley Mile and Group 1 company.
Earlier in the season, she won the Group 3 Prix de la Grotte at ParisLongchamp, while her subsequent campaign has been less straightforward. Her recent results therefore contrast with Blue Bolt’s winning sequence, but her previous performances at Newmarket give her valuable course experience. With True Love no longer among the final declarations, Evolutionist is one of seven runners set to contest Saturday’s Group 1.
Two Year Old Trophy – Redcar
The William Hill Two Year Old Trophy is a Listed, Class 1 sprint over 5f 217yd at Redcar. The winner receives £85,065, making it a valuable opportunity for juveniles approaching the end of their first campaign. Redcar’s straight course is relatively flat, placing plenty of emphasis on speed and positioning, while inexperienced two-year-olds can still improve significantly between races. Satellite Of Love and Revels bring considerably more race experience than Myesme, giving the three runners contrasting profiles.
Satellite Of LoveSatellite Of Love has already built a useful record over approximately six furlongs. The Clive Cox-trained colt won his first two starts at Windsor and Newbury before stepping into stronger Class 2 company, finishing fifth of 20 at York and then second of 17 at Doncaster.
That progression means Saturday represents another rise in class rather than a dramatic change in distance. He has experience on both good-to-firm and good-to-soft ground and has already encountered the demands of sizeable juvenile fields. With four runs behind him, the Redcar Trophy offers the opportunity to see whether that developing form can translate to Listed company.
RevelsRevels already knows Redcar, having won a seven-furlong maiden at the course on his debut. He later added a Class 2 nursery victory over six furlongs at Goodwood, where he came through an 18-runner field, before gaining further experience at Ascot, York and Newbury.
His latest fourth in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes is particularly relevant to Saturday’s assignment because it came over six furlongs against stronger company than he has faced in many juvenile races. This previous Redcar victory and experience at Group 2 level give his profile an interesting mixture of course familiarity and higher-class exposure.
MyesmeMyesme is the least exposed of the field. The Edward Bethell-trained filly made a promising debut at Ayr, finishing second by a neck over six furlongs on good-to-soft ground. Her pedigree also has a clear sprint influence: she is by Havana Grey and out of an Exceed And Excel mare.
She remains much less experienced than Satellite Of Love or Revels, however, and stepping into a valuable Listed contest represents another significant stage in her development. How she handles that rise in class is one of the more interesting questions in a race designed to bring together established juvenile form and horses whose full potential is still emerging.
