Bet365 Hurdle – Wetherby

The bet365 Hurdle, also known as the West Yorkshire Hurdle, is a Grade 2 contest run over three miles on turf. It provides an early opportunity for established staying hurdlers to return to competitive action and begin preparing for the season's major long-distance races. Wetherby's galloping, left-handed circuit places considerable demands on stamina, particularly when autumn rain produces testing ground. The race carries a guaranteed prize fund of £62,500, with more than £36,000 going to the winner. Strong Leader and Take No Chances are among the leading names in the field, with the former returning after winning the contest in 2025.

Strong Leader

Strong Leader returns to Wetherby with valuable experience over the course and distance. Trained by Olly Murphy, the nine-year-old has established himself as a high-class staying hurdler, having won the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree in 2024 before adding the West Yorkshire Hurdle to his record.

His victory at Wetherby last autumn demonstrated his ability to handle the track's three-mile challenge, although his subsequent campaign was less convincing. He finished sixth before being pulled up in his final two appearances of the season, leaving connections with questions to answer ahead of his return.

Sean Bowen is booked to ride again, and the pair's familiarity with the racecourse is an interesting aspect of Saturday's contest. Strong Leader's established stamina and previous success at this level make his seasonal return particularly noteworthy, although recent performances leave some uncertainty over his current form.

Take No Chances

Dan Skelton's Take No Chances provides a contrasting profile, combining experience in competitive staying hurdles with a more recent racecourse appearance.

The eight-year-old mare has competed consistently in valuable hurdle races, demonstrating her ability to remain competitive against strong opposition. Her previous performances include a runner-up finish behind Strong Leader in this contest last year, offering a direct comparison between two of Saturday's principal contenders.

Unlike several horses making their seasonal debuts, Take No Chances has already raced this autumn. Her latest outing, however, ended in an unplaced finish, making her response an important consideration.

The three-mile distance is familiar territory, while her previous experience at Wetherby should help connections assess how she handles the conditions. With Harry Skelton booked to ride, she returns to a course where she has already demonstrated her ability to compete at this level.

Charlie Hall Chase – Wetherby

The Charlie Hall Chase is Wetherby's principal autumn steeplechase and one of the traditional early-season fixtures for established staying chasers. Run over approximately three miles, the Grade 2 contest demands accurate jumping, stamina and the ability to maintain a strong rhythm around the Yorkshire circuit. The race carries a guaranteed prize fund fund of £100,000, with more than £56,000 going to the winner. It also provides an opportunity to assess horses who could go on to contest prestigious staying chases during the winter. This year's field includes Pic D'Orhy, Handstands and The Real Whacker, three horses with different backgrounds and considerable experience over fences.

Pic D'orhy

Pic D'Orhy arrives at Wetherby beginning a new chapter in his career, having moved from Paul Nicholls to Dan Skelton.

The experienced eleven-year-old has built an impressive record in high-class steeplechases, particularly at Ascot, where his jumping and ability to sustain a strong gallop have contributed to several notable victories. His achievements include multiple Grade 1 wins in the Ascot Chase.

He also has relevant Charlie Hall experience, having finished second in the 2025 renewal. That performance demonstrated his ability to compete over Wetherby's three-mile trip, although the course presents a different challenge from the right-handed tracks where he has enjoyed many of his strongest performances.

Harry Skelton takes the ride on Saturday. With Pic D'Orhy returning from a break and representing a new stable, his performance should offer an indication of how well he is adapting to his new surroundings.

Handstands

Handstands represents the younger generation of staying chasers and has already demonstrated considerable ability over fences.

Trained by Ben Pauling, the seven-year-old enjoyed a successful novice chasing campaign, including victory in the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novices' Chase at Sandown in February 2025. That achievement established him as a promising performer with the ability to compete in demanding conditions.

His subsequent appearances have produced mixed results, and Saturday's race offers another opportunity to assess his progress against experienced open-company opposition.

Wetherby's three-mile distance should provide a meaningful test of his stamina, while the quality of his jumping will be important against established Grade 1 performers. His relatively young age compared with several rivals adds another dimension to the early-season contest.

The Real Whacker

The Real Whacker returns to Wetherby with proven credentials as a staying chaser and a notable Cheltenham Festival victory already on his record.

Trained by Patrick Neville, the ten-year-old won the Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices' Chase in 2023, demonstrating stamina and determination over three miles. He subsequently established himself in open company, including a victory in the 2024 Charlie Hall Chase.

His more recent form includes a win on his latest appearance, providing a positive end to a sequence of less successful results.

The Real Whacker's previous success at Wetherby is particularly relevant, as the Charlie Hall Chase places considerable emphasis on jumping fluency and maintaining momentum over the full distance. With Brian Hughes booked to ride, he returns to familiar surroundings for another important early-season assignment.

BetVictor, Remembering Envoi Allen Champion Chase – Down Royal

Down Royal hosts the first Grade 1 chase of the new National Hunt season in Britain and Ireland, with the three-mile contest renamed in memory of Envoi Allen, who won the race three times. The prestigious event carries a guaranteed prize fund of €160,000, with €94,240 going to the winner. The course's right-handed configuration and testing fences demand both jumping accuracy and stamina, while the going is currently described as yielding. Seven runners are declared, including Heart Wood, Romeo Coolio and Haiti Couleurs, several of whom are using the race to begin campaigns targeting major winter chasing prizes.

Heart Wood

Heart Wood returns to action following an impressive 2025–26 campaign, highlighted by his victory in the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham in March.

Trained by Henry de Bromhead, the eight-year-old defeated Jonbon by ten lengths over approximately two miles and four furlongs, producing a particularly impressive jumping performance. He subsequently finished third in the Melling Chase at Aintree.

Saturday's three-mile distance presents a different challenge. Although Heart Wood has previously demonstrated his stamina over longer trips, his most significant achievements have come over intermediate distances.

De Bromhead has indicated that the Down Royal contest will help determine whether the horse should pursue longer-distance targets this season. With Darragh O'Keeffe booked to ride, Heart Wood's return provides an interesting test of his versatility at the highest level.

Romeo Coolio

Romeo Coolio represents Gordon Elliott and enters the new season with considerable experience in high-class novice company.

The seven-year-old developed an impressive record over fences during the previous campaign, recording several victories before his season ended with a disappointing performance in the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase at Cheltenham in March, where he was pulled up.

That result contrasts with his earlier progress and makes his return particularly interesting. Saturday's three-mile trip and Grade 1 opposition provide an opportunity to assess his progress beyond novice company.

Jack Kennedy is booked to ride, while Elliott's familiarity with Down Royal adds further context to Romeo Coolio's seasonal reappearance. His jumping and ability to sustain his effort over three miles will be important aspects of his performance.

Haiti Couleurs

Haiti Couleurs brings an established staying profile to the Champion Chase, having achieved notable success in some of the most demanding races on the National Hunt calendar.

Trained in Wales by Rebecca Curtis, the nine-year-old won the Irish Grand National in April 2025 before adding the Welsh Grand National at Chepstow later that year. He also claimed the Grade 2 Denman Chase at Newbury in February 2026.

His subsequent appearances in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National were less successful, but his record demonstrates considerable stamina and experience over extended distances.

Saturday's three-mile contest is shorter than some of his previous targets, presenting a different test of his speed and jumping rhythm.

Paul Townend takes the ride in place of regular jockey Sean Bowen, who has commitments at Wetherby. Curtis has expressed satisfaction with Haiti Couleurs' condition following his summer break, making his return another notable storyline in Down Royal's opening Grade 1 chase of the season.
