The PDC World Darts Championship kicks off at Alexandra Palace on Thursday as Luke Littler defends the Sid Waddell Trophy in London for the first time, with three weeks of magical dartistry in store.
PDC World Championship
Luke Littler casts a very long shadow over the World Championship race and, if he is at his best, the teenage sensation will be very hard to topple.
One player that could do it, though, is the 2021 Ally Pally hero Gerwyn Price. The Iceman notched six straight wins against The Nuke in late 2024/early 2025, showing that he's got no fears in going toe-to-toe with the sport's most sensational talent.
Price's boisterous on-stage persona isn't for everyone, but it is intimidating, and he's a match for any player on his day.
Price appears to have quietened the hecklers in the crowd to some degree and his Ally Pally record is strong. He was a semi-finalist the year before he won and has reached the last-eight three times in four years since.
If the seedings play out as expected, Price and Littler will meet in a sensational quarter-final. The Iceman has proved his ability to hang with Littler and he has been to the semi-finals of the Grand Slam and Players Championship recently.
He's a lively outsider in a market dominated by the teenage sensation set to defend his world crown for the very first time, which brings its own degree of pressure.
PDC World Championship
Martin Schindler is one of a record eight German players in the draw at Ally Pally and the 13th seed has recently ascended to the top-16 in the PDC Order of Merit for the first time.
He won his first Players Championship title in March and his third European Tour title at the Austrian Darts Open in April.
The 29-year-old is a four-time PDC ranking event winner and he will now want to improve his record at Alexandra Palace, where he has yet to bypass the third round in six attempts.
He bumped into Michael Smith in the 2023 event, when Bully Boy was then ranked No.1 in the world, while his two most recent attempts were ended by Scott Williams and an inspired Callan Rydz – who played as well as anyone here last year.
Fourth seed Stephen Bunting is favourite but this quarter looks wide open and an in-form Schindler has to be respected.
PDC World Championship
Littler is the best player in the world right now but 'the other Luke', Humphries, is clearly next best ahead of the likes of Michael van Gerwen, Bunting, Gian van Veen and Josh Rock.
The 2024 world champion lost to Peter Wright in the fourth round a year ago but won the Premier League this year and has been runner-up to Littler in the World Grand Prix and the Grand Slam.
The Nuke now leads their overall head-to-head 16-10 but Cool Hand is very much a rival of substance and is likely to go deep at Alexandra Palace.
