Coral Charge – Sandown
Run over 5 furlongs and 10 yards on Sandown Park's turf course, the Coral Charge is open to horses aged three years and older and is renowned for placing a premium on raw speed. The sharp, galloping layout features a slight downhill section before the straight, leaving little room for error and rewarding horses that can break quickly and maintain their pace all the way to the line.
AsfooraAmong the standout contenders in this year's Coral Charge is Asfoora, an eight-year-old Australian mare trained by Henry Dwyer, one of the finest international sprinters of the modern era. A daughter of Flying Artie, she arrives at Sandown with an outstanding record and a wealth of top-level experience over the minimum trip.
Her preferred distance of 1000 to 1100 metres aligns perfectly with Sandown's sharp 5f 10y course, while her record on fast British summer ground, including Group 1 victories in Australia, Britain, France and Ireland, makes her a natural fit for the Coral Charge.
RumstarRumstar returns to defend his Coral Charge crown after producing a perfectly timed performance to land the 2025 Coral Charge (Group 3) over this same 5f 10y course.
Sandown's sharp five-furlong course often favours horses racing prominently, yet last year Rumstar showed that a patient ride and a decisive turn of foot can be just as effective when the race unfolds in his favour.
With conditions likely to suit once again, he has every chance of mounting a bold defence of the Coral Charge crown.
Coral Distaff – Sandown
The focus later in the afternoon switches from the speedsters to the milers with the 15:00 Coral Distaff (Listed), a high-quality contest for fillies and mares aged three and upwards.
Act of KindnessOne of the most intriguing runners in the Coral Distaff is Act Of Kindness, the beautifully bred three-year-old filly who opened her account at the second attempt in a 7f maiden at Newmarket in October 2025
Her three-year-old campaign has seen her in much stronger company. On her seasonal reappearance, she finished a creditable third in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket, shaping with plenty of promise behind smart opposition. That effort suggested she possessed the ability to compete at the Pattern level and earned her another opportunity in Listed company.
EstissaAnother progressive three-year-old with strong claims is Estissa, who arrives at Sandown with an impressive record of two wins, two second-place finishes and a third from just five career starts.
She first advertised her potential when breaking her maiden at Goodwood as a two-year-old, showing the stamina and determination to score over a middle-distance trip.
Estissa returned this season in excellent form, landing a conditions race at Newmarket in April. Defeating a field of well-bred fillies, she confirmed that she had trained well over the winter and earned her place in Pattern company.
Coral‑Eclipse Stakes – Sandown
Worth £1 million, with an outstanding £560,200 awarded to the winner, the Coral‑Eclipse Stakes (Group 1) is the headline race of the meeting. It is run over 1 mile, 1 furlong and 209 yards on Sandown's turf course and regularly attracts the very best middle-distance performers from Britain, Ireland and beyond.
Constitution RiverThe main Coral-Eclipse favourite this year is Constitution River, the exciting three-year-old colt from the Aidan O'Brien stable. His reputation soared with a commanding victory in the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) at Chantilly in May. Racing against 17 rivals on firm ground, Constitution River overcame a wide draw by travelling smoothly just behind the leaders before producing a decisive turn of foot inside the final 200 metres. He pulled three-quarters of a length clear of stablemate Hawk Mountain, a result that firmly established him as the leading three-year-old middle-distance colt of his generation.
The French Derby success did not come out of nowhere. Earlier in the season, he had already hinted at his considerable talent when finishing second in the Group 3 Prix de Fontainebleau over a mile at Longchamp, before placing third in the Listed Prix Djebel at Chantilly. The Eclipse could also provide a fascinating rematch with Hawk Mountain, who chased him home at Chantilly.
GethinWhile Constitution River is the main favourite, the imposing four-year-old grey, trained by Owen Burrows for Wathnan Racing, is widely regarded as the principal danger to the French Derby winner.
Gethin, a son of Ghaiyyath, one of Europe's outstanding middle-distance performers in recent years, established himself as a consistent performer in Pattern company with a series of high-class displays during the past two seasons.
His most significant piece of form came in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes (Group 3) at Sandown in May, when he finished a close second to the highly regarded Ombudsman.
If Constitution River fails to reproduce his brilliant French Derby form, Gethin appears well placed to capitalise and could be the horse best equipped to spoil the Ballydoyle party in Sandown's £1 million showpiece.
Hawk MountainAidan O'Brien's formidable hand in this year's Coral-Eclipse is strengthened further by Hawk Mountain, the talented three-year-old who renews rivalry with stablemate Constitution River after chasing him home in the French Derby.
Hawk Mountain has already established himself among the leading middle-distance colts of his generation with an excellent second-place finish in the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) at Chantilly in May. Racing on firm ground, he stayed on strongly to finish just three-quarters of a length behind Constitution River, completing a memorable one-two for Ballydoyle. That performance suggested there may be little between the pair as they meet again at Sandown.
