Glorious Goodwood: Day 4 Races and Runners

Run over a marathon trip of two miles and five furlongs, this Class 2 Heritage Handicap is the longest race staged at Goodwood and one of the longest handicap contests in the British Flat season.

Open to horses aged three years and older, the race has become a specialist target for staying handicappers, with a prize fund exceeding £100,000 attracting a competitive field of proven marathon performers.

One of the most progressive runners in this year's Goodwood Handicap is Valiancy, a lightly raced four-year-old from the powerful William Haggas stable who made an excellent start to his career, winning three of his seven starts while finishing in the first three on six occasions.

Valiancy arrives at Goodwood in winning form after producing another polished display at Hamilton in May, where he landed a competitive Class 3 handicap over just short of a mile and six furlongs.

Believitanducan is the five-year-old who has combined success over hurdles with an increasingly impressive record on the Flat, collecting seven victories from just 18 career starts.

He has flourished since returning to the Flat, winning his last three starts in increasingly competitive handicaps. His latest success came in a valuable Class 2 contest at Newcastle in June, where, under William Buick, he comfortably defeated a 20-runner field over two miles. That performance completed a hat-trick following earlier victories at Ascot and Chester, confirming his rapid progression through the staying ranks.

Irish hopes are carried by Defiantly, a lightly raced four-year-old from the stable of Joseph Patrick O'Brien, whose profile suggests there could be more to come now that he is stepping into the staying handicap division. After opening his account in a Leopardstown maiden over a mile and a half in April, Defiantly has made notable progress with each outing.

His standout performance came at Royal Ascot in June, where he was beaten only a head in the highly competitive Copper Horse Stakes. That Ascot display also suggested that longer distances bring out the best in him.

Open to horses aged three and above, the Golden Mile has established itself as one of the richest flat handicaps in Europe with its prize fund of £150,000 and is one of the most competitive and valuable handicap contests of the summer set to unfold over the famous Sussex mile. This Class 2 Heritage Handicap regularly attracts a field packed with quality performers.

One of the leading contenders in this year's renewal is Indalo, who arrives at Goodwood in the best form of his career. The five-year-old grey gelding has developed into a high-class handicapper, boasting five wins from just 13 starts, along with three second-place finishes and two thirds.

Bred in Ireland by Phoenix Of Spain out of Pearly Empress, Indalo has shown his versatility by winning on both turf and the all-weather. His latest success came at Sandown on 4 July, where he produced an impressive performance to land a competitive Class 2 handicap over a mile by a length and a quarter.

There is also encouragement in his previous experience of Goodwood. In last year's Golden Mile, Indalo finished a respectable fourth, beaten fewer than four lengths after a competitive run, suggesting the undulating track and stiff mile hold no fears. That experience could prove invaluable in a race where positioning and luck in running often make the difference.

Another progressive contender to keep a close eye on is Beagle Bay, an unexposed four-year-old from the Ralph Beckett stable who has quickly established himself as one of the more intriguing runners in this year's Golden Mile. Bred in France by New Bay out of Volunteer Point, the bay gelding has raced only five times but has already compiled an impressive record of three wins and one second.

His breakthrough came at Chelmsford in March when he comfortably landed a novice event before following up with a dominant four-length victory in a handicap at Yarmouth on soft ground.

His biggest success to date arrived at Sandown in June, where he stepped up to a competitive Class 2 handicap over a mile and produced another polished display. Ridden confidently by Hector Crouch, he travelled strongly throughout before asserting inside the final furlong to beat a quality field.

Following the fiercely competitive Golden Mile, attention switches to pure speed as the King George Stakes takes centre stage. Run over a lightning-fast five furlongs, the Group 2 contest is one of Europe's premier sprint races and has long been regarded as the flagship sprint on the fourth day of Glorious Goodwood.

Among the leading contenders for this year's King George Stakes is Night Raider, a proven Group 1 performer who arrives at Goodwood with the credentials to make a serious impact. The Karl Burke-trained five-year-old, owned by Wathnan Racing, has established himself as one of Britain's leading sprinters, winning six of his 16 career starts and earning more than £265,000 in prize money.

Night Raider's career has been built almost exclusively around sprinting, with victories recorded on both turf and the all-weather, demonstrating his adaptability across different racing surfaces. While his previous visits to Goodwood have yet to produce a victory, he was far from disgraced when finishing sixth in last year's King George Stakes, beaten only two lengths after racing in a highly competitive field. That experience of Goodwood's demanding five furlongs could prove invaluable this time around.

Another major player in the King George Stakes is Rumstar, the six-year-old son of Havana Grey, who has developed into one of Britain's most reliable five-furlong specialists, recording six victories.

Rumstar arrives at Goodwood on the back of another outstanding performance in the Coral Charge at Sandown, where he successfully defended his Group 3 crown, bouncing back in style after a below-par effort in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot. The victory confirmed that he remains at the peak of his powers and arrives in Sussex with confidence restored.
