EFL 7/1 Acca – Gab Sutton
Another exciting weekend of EFL action awaits, and expert Gab Sutton has selected three teams to claim victory in this weekend's EFL Acca!
Sheffield United to win
Sheffield United have won half their games since Chris Wilder returned to the club in September, and have improved as the season has gone on, with four wins in their last six league games boosting their feint Play-Off hopes.
The right-sided trio of Ki-Jana Hoever, Tahith Chong and Sydie Peck looks like the route to some chances for the Blades, based on their 2-0 victory at QPR last time out.
Visitors West Brom have put faith in rookie James Morrison to save their season, opting against appointing an experienced manager, which could be their undoing; the Baggies legend was unable to get the response he wanted, in last weekend’s 2-1 loss at Oxford.
Albion conceded soft set piece goals at the Kassam, and the result keeps the West Midlanders winless in 2026.
Wigan to win
Putting an 8/5 shot into an acca is something of a high-risk, high-reward move, but Wigan have demonstrated real signs of resurgence under Gary Caldwell, winning two of their three games since their FA Cup-winning captain returned to the club for his second spell as manager – he won the League One title in 2015-16 in his first.
The Latics have beaten Play-Off contenders Luton and Huddersfield under Caldwell’s guidance, which suggests a certain amount of relief from the players following the end of the previous regime, so there could be some value in backing the West Lancashire outfit in the last quarter of the campaign.
Hosts Blackpool, like their opponents, are perceived to have a squad that’s better on paper than their current position of 20th might suggest, but as the old adage goes, footballs not played on paper.
It’s one win in seven for the Tangerines, who have thrown in poor home performances in that sequence, against Stockport and Plymouth Argyle.
Oldham to win
There’s not much love lost between Tranmere and Oldham. It’s not quite a Liverpool vs Manchester rivalry, because neither fanbase would willingly associate themselves with their nearby cities, yet still there’s an undertone of a Merseyside vs Lancashire type grudge rooted in dockland history and cultural contrast.
Right now, it’s the Latics who have the happier fanbase, sitting comfortably in midtable in their first season up after winning the National League Play-Offs last season, and unbeaten in five under ex-Rovers boss Micky Mellon.
The Scot’s former employers, meanwhile, have had to change managers once again, with Andy Crosby dismissed following a run of 10 defeats in 11 that’s seen them plunged into relegation danger.
Former Barrow and Fleetwood boss Pete Wild is the current favourite to take the job until the end of the season, potentially putting him in the unusual position of being in the dugout against his boyhood club.
