Doncaster Ladies Day: Park Hill and May Hill Stakes Preview

Often referred to as the “fillies’ St Leger”, the Park Hill Fillies’ Stakes is a Group 2 run over 1m 6f 115y, making stamina one of its defining requirements. The £165,000 race is open to fillies and mares aged three and older, with £93,572 going to the winner. Its place within the St Leger Festival is particularly appropriate: runners face essentially the same staying distance that makes the Classic such a distinctive race later in the meeting.

Waardah brings particularly relevant form to the race: she is already a dual Group 2 winner over 1m 6f. The Owen Burrows-trained four-year-old won the Lillie Langtry Stakes at Goodwood in 2025 and returned to the race this August and won again, demonstrating both her effectiveness over a staying trip and her ability to reproduce that form at Pattern level.

Her 2026 campaign began with second place in the Group 3 Pinnacle Stakes, where she finished behind Estrange, who subsequently won at Group 1 level in Ireland. Waardah also has experience of racing in Group 1 company herself, having contested the British Champions Fillies’ & Mares’ Stakes at Ascot last October.

Danielle offers an interesting contrast, with Doncaster already a particularly familiar venue. The five-year-old has twice won Listed races over 1m 2f at the course, both on heavy ground, including a nine-length success in the Gillies Fillies’ Stakes in November 2025. She also contested this race last year, finishing fourth over the same 1m 6f 115y distance she will face on Thursday.

The John and Thady Gosden-trained mare has since added a first Group victory to her record. Stepping up to approximately 1m 6f in the Bronte Cup at York in May, Danielle made the running and held on by 1¼ lengths, demonstrating that she can stay beyond the shorter trips of her earlier Doncaster victories.

There is also a direct form line between the two leading names discussed here. Danielle finished three-quarters of a length behind Waardah in the 2025 Lillie Langtry and returned to Goodwood this August, where she finished third in the same Group 2. With Group-level staying form and proven performances at Doncaster already on her record, she brings plenty of relevant experience into this year’s Park Hill.

Attention quickly switches from established stayers to potential stars of the next generation. The May Hill Stakes is a £125,000 Group 2 over one mile for two-year-old fillies, with the winner receiving £70,888. As well as being an important prize in its own right, the race has traditionally offered an early indication of which juveniles could emerge as significant three-year-olds and possible Classic contenders. This year’s field includes fillies coming into the race via different routes, from lightly raced maiden and novice winners to juveniles already successful in Group company.

Musical Times represents Charlie Appleby and Godolphin following a lightly raced first season. The Dubawi filly has raced three times in 2026, winning twice, including over seven furlongs at Newmarket and approximately a mile at Yarmouth.

That experience over Thursday’s distance could prove significant as she moves into Group 2 company. Her pedigree also brings together Dubawi and New Approach, two influences associated with high-class performers over a range of middle distances.

Musical Times’ latest appearance came over a shorter six furlongs at Newbury, where she finished fourth. Returning to a mile therefore puts her back over a trip at which she has already produced winning form, while the May Hill offers a considerably stronger examination of her progress.

Ballyskeagh has had only two starts, but both offer useful context for Thursday’s race. Joseph O’Brien’s Gleneagles filly won on debut over 7f 50y at Leopardstown in July, beating Sea Of Rain by half a length after finishing strongly.

The pair met again in the Group 3 Newtownanner Stud Irish EBF Stakes at the Curragh in August, this time over a mile. Sea Of Rain reversed the result, but Ballyskeagh was only three-quarters of a length behind in second.

That gives Ballyskeagh experience over the May Hill distance as well as a competitive run at Group level. With one victory and one Group 3 second from two appearances, the move into Group 2 company marks the next step in a promising but still very young career.

Sea Of Rain brings more racecourse experience than either Musical Times or Ballyskeagh, having made seven starts as a juvenile. Bred and trained by Jim Bolger, the daughter of Naval Crown needed several runs to record her first victory, but her progression since stepping up to a mile has been notable.

After getting off the mark over that distance at the Curragh, she returned to the course for the Group 3 Newtownanner Stud Irish EBF Stakes in August. Sea Of Rain defeated Ballyskeagh by three-quarters of a length, becoming Naval Crown’s first stakes winner in the process.

Bolger has spoken of Sea Of Rain as a potential Oaks filly for next season, adding further long-term interest to her appearance at Doncaster. The May Hill provides another step up in grade, but her recent Group 3 success and growing effectiveness over a mile make Thursday’s race a natural next step in that progression.
