Celtic vs Hearts: A Scottish Title Shootout

Kelechi Iheanacho’s controversial last-gasp penalty at Motherwell on Wednesday night set up a title showdown for the ages.

Scottish Premiership

Celtic take on Hearts at Celtic Park tomorrow lunchtime in a game which is essentially a winner-take-all showdown for the premiership title (although technically a draw would be good enough for Hearts to win their first league title in 66 years).

Leaders Hearts are on 80 points while second-placed Celtic are just a point behind on 79, with Rangers now well adrift of title contention after four league losses on the bounce.

After one of the most chaotic league campaigns in the club’s history, Celtic are now favourites to win the league at 11/20 with CopyBet, while Hearts are 11/8 to become the first non-Glasgow side to win the title since Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen back in 1985.

Hearts will be buoyed by the fact that the last time they visited Celtic Park, back in December, they were 2-1 winners, with the influential Claudio Braga on the scoresheet (although that was during Wilfried Nancy’s chaotic 33-day tenure as Celtic boss). There is little doubt, however, that Hearts have made most of the running this term and were as many as eight points clear at the top of the table back in October.

It has only been the recent dogged determination of a Celtic side, who have former manager Martin O’Neill in his second interim spell of the season (it really has been quite the season) that has kept them in the race. Six wins in a row in the league have given them the chance to win a title that looked far away in the distance during the winter months.

Many neutrals will be hoping that Hearts can get over the line, break the long-standing Glasgow stronghold on Scottish football and, frankly, shake things up a little.

Can they go into the lion's den of Celtic Park and create history?
