Celebration Mile 2026 preview: Zavateri and Seagulls Eleven at Goodwood

The Virgin Bet Celebration Mile Stakes is the feature race on Saturday’s August Bank Holiday card at Goodwood, bringing together three-year-olds and older horses over one mile. The Group 2 contest carries a first prize of £113,420 and is an established late-summer target for leading milers. Goodwood’s right-handed, undulating course adds another consideration, particularly around the bend into a long, slightly downhill home straight. The ground is expected to be on the quicker side - more natural in British racing context, although conditions should be checked closer to the race time. Recent renewals have favoured three-year-olds, with Jonquil winning in 2025 and Ice Max in 2024.

Zavateri returns to Goodwood with one of the most notable achievements in the field already on his record. Trained by Eve Johnson Houghton, the three-year-old enjoyed an excellent juvenile campaign in 2025, winning four of his first seven starts and establishing himself as a Group-level performer. His season included victories in the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket and Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Goodwood before he went on to land the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh.

The Vintage Stakes victory is especially relevant ahead of Saturday. Run over seven furlongs, it demonstrated Zavateri’s ability to cope with Goodwood’s distinctive terrain, even though the Celebration Mile presents a different challenge over the longer distance. His National Stakes success subsequently confirmed his standing among the stronger juveniles of his generation, but his three-year-old campaign has so far produced a different set of questions.

Zavateri began the season by finishing second in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury following an injury-enforced absence. He later returned to Goodwood for the Group 1 Sussex Stakes, where he finished fifth, before finishing fifth again in the City of York Stakes over seven furlongs last Saturday. The Celebration Mile therefore comes just a week after his latest appearance.

The move back to a mile is another interesting aspect of his participation. His major victories have come over shorter distances, while his recent appearances have included races at both seven furlongs and a mile. Saturday will provide another indication of which distance suits him best as he continues his first season competing against older horses.

As one of the three-year-olds in the line-up, Zavateri also receives the relevant weight-for-age allowance from his older rivals. Rather than pointing towards a particular outcome, the combination of his previous Group 1 success, Goodwood experience, quick return from York and another attempt at a mile gives his appearance several sporting angles to follow.

Seagulls Eleven comes into the Celebration Mile from a different angle. The four-year-old gelding, trained by Hugo Palmer, has developed into an established stakes performer and already has winning form over Saturday’s course and distance. His record includes four victories from 16 starts, with his progress over the past two seasons taking him into Group and Listed races.

His most relevant success came at Goodwood in August 2025, when he won the Group 3 Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes over one mile.That was his first victory at Group level, establishing his ability to handle both the distance and the particular demands of this course. Moving from Group 3 success to Saturday’s Group 2 contest represents another step in class, but his subsequent performances show that his Goodwood victory was not his only notable result.

Seagulls Eleven travelled to France in May this year and won the Listed Prix de Montretout at ParisLongchamp over slightly more than a mile. He followed that performance with another important victory in the Diomed Stakes at Epsom in June, again over a distance just beyond a mile. Those performances underline his versatility on different tracks and show that he has remained effective around the Celebration Mile distance.

His Goodwood record is particularly useful when considering Saturday’s conditions. Some horses encounter the course for the first time and have to adapt to its bends and undulations, whereas Seagulls Eleven has already produced a Group-winning performance over the same mile. His success at Epsom, another track with pronounced contours, also adds to a profile built around performances away from conventional flat, galloping courses.

The Celebration Mile now asks Seagulls Eleven to compete at Group 2 level against horses bringing different forms of high-class experience. Zavateri arrives as a previous Group 1 winner, while Seagulls Eleven brings proven course-and-distance form and more recent victories at Listed and Group level. That contrast is part of what makes Saturday’s race interesting without reducing it to a simple prediction: Goodwood provides a distinctive setting in which class, recent form, distance and previous experience of the course all play a part.
